Not all asteroid hazards create impact craters. When small-to-medium asteroids encounter atmospheric ram pressure, they can detonate as destructive airbursts.

1. 2013 Chelyabinsk Event: A Modern Wake-Up Call A ~20m stony asteroid exploded 30 km above Russia, releasing ~500 kilotons of TNT energy. The supersonic shockwave shattered thousands of windows, injuring over 1,500 people.

2. 1908 Tunguska Explosion: 2,150 km² Flattened A ~50–60m object detonated 8 km above Siberia with ~15 megatons of energy, toppling 80 million trees across 2,150 square kilometers without leaving a crater.

3. Ram Pressure & Pancake Disruption Physics Hypersonic flight compresses atmospheric gas in front of the bolide. When dynamic stagnation pressure exceeds the asteroid's yield strength, it flattens and fragments cataclysmically.
